June ?? 1203: A party consisting of Quinlan, Steve, Callee, Saddanar, Renchor, Roman, ?? and ?? meet at Steven's castle to discuss Quinlan's situation. After much discussion, the group decides to head for the Village of Darkhaven near ?? and explore the old Darkhaven Manor. The journey is uneventful and once in the Darkhaven, they inquire as to the location of the Darkhaven Manor. Directions are given, but the group is warned no to go there. Failing to heed this warning, the party travels to the Darkhaven Manor. To their surprise, the Manor is not abandoned at all. In fact, a grand party is taking place.

From a hiding place not far from the manor, the party observes richly appointed carriages arrive at the manor. Finely dressed men, woman, and children, emerge from the carriages, are met at the manor's door and are ushered into the affair. The party can hear music and laughter coming from inside the manor. All, however, is not well as the party observes a well-dressed young man in the bushes necking with his girlfriend. As they observe more closely, they come to realize that the young man is not necking, but rather sucking the blood from the girl. The look on the girl's face is one of ecstasy and ignorance as her life is drained and her corpse is left laying near the side of the mansion

After a while, it's decided that Quinlan should approach the Manor and try to gain entrance to the party. After a brief discussion with the door man, an unsociable man named "Trent", Quinlan discovers that help may be allow access to the party if he can supply a snack. The snack, of course, being someone the vampire can feed upon. There is much discussion about supplying a snack for the vampires, but Calee volunteers to be the snack.

The inside of the manor, although richly appointed, proves to be a dangerous place for any non-vampire. In a room, off the kitchen, dozens of bodies are piles; the blood drained for entertainment and sustenance. Small droplets of blood can be seen sporadically on the floor, and the occasional blood smear can be seem on the wall or doorjamb.

With snack (Calee) in tow, Quinlan makes his way to the grand ball room located on the third floor of the manor. Here is there the bulk of the festivities are taking place. A grand ensemble is located at the far end of the ball room and presiding over the affair is Astolf Darkhaven and is wife ?? The vampires are ancient and as soon as Quinlan enters the room his presence is felt. After sizing up Quinlan, Astolf halts the music and asked the monk why he has intruded on the gathering. Quinlan tells Astolf about the item in which he seeks and all the vampires chuckle at the existence of such an item. When the crowd quiets, Astolf say “I’ve heard rumors of such an item. Long ago whispers that one of my ancient ancestors had such a device, but this relative has not been seen for centuries.” Quinlan listens intently. Astolf continues “Perhaps I will tell what I know, but first the snack.” Astolf will tell Quinlan a clue, but he must first be allowed to feed on Calee. Quinlan and Calee agree and Astolf leaves only enough of Calee’s blood to sustain her life; leaving her unconscious and wishing again for the experience.
